HELEN BARWOOD
Helen Barwood (maiden name Iles) was born in Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire England, in 1921. At the age of 6 she was placed in a local orphanage and remained there until reaching adulthood. It was at the orphanage she developed her love of poetry
On leaving the orphanage Helen moved across the River Humber to the nearby town of Grimsby Lincolnshire.
During the Second World War she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service where she served for four years.
In 1948 she married Jack Barwood and moved to the town's Nunsthorpe housing estate, where they raised four children. Here she continued with her poetry. Jack died in 1988. Some 40 poems are published on the internet. When the News of The World asked readers to send in poems about Princess Diana following her death. Helen's was one of those chosen and published.
Sadly Helen died in 2008 leaving a rich tapestry of poems for all to enjoy.
